By releasing the National Security Plan 2025, the current US administration is clearly bringing the idea of special interests back to prominence. The 1984 described in George Orwell's 1949 book threatens to come true.
The starting point of geopolitical thinking and the method of action to be implemented in the plan is a great power competition, in which the three great powers - the United States, Russia and China - divide the world among themselves. The United States "takes care" of the Western Hemisphere, Russia of Europe and Asia (in Asia, at least to the extent that the regions have belonged to Russia at some point in one way or another), and China of Southeast Asia (including Taiwan) and at least large parts of Africa. Completely without caring about what the states themselves want. Where the remaining remnants of the division Australia and New Zealand will end up is hardly of interest to any of the great powers, at least at this stage?
Judging by the reactions of the partners, I could also imagine that Trump has already made a preliminary agreement with Putin and perhaps Xi Jinping on this matter. At least all three have expressed their strong dissatisfaction with the current law- and rule-based world order. It is high time for the rest of us to wake up.
If you think about it as a Finn and a European, you have to think about the whole picture and the consequences if Trump is able to implement the ideology he has published. It is not enough to worry about the destruction of American democracy, the loss of a key ally, or even the erosion of NATO benefits for the security of Europe or Finland. We must start acting to prevent such a development.
While Trump's actions so far have been, apparently following the example of Neville Chamberlain in the late 1930s - aimed at appeasement - it has once again proven to be a wrong way to act. You can't keep politicians who are thirsty for "wannabe" world domination - let alone school bullies - in check with constant appeasement. A new approach is needed, because the published National Security Strategy is a real Zeitenwende.
